Pool Preventative Maintenance

The following procedures are what we find to be most effective.

Test Water: Check for Alkalinity, pH, Free Chlorine, Stabilizer, and Hardness levels. Make sure that all levels are within their acceptable range.

  • Alkalinity:
  • 60-150
  • pH:
  • 7.2-7.6
  • Cyanuric Acid:
  • 25-100
  • Hardness:
  • 200-450
  • Total & Free Chlorine:
  • 1-3

  • If Total and Free Chlorine levels are different, then you have Combined Chlorine (also known as Chloramine or Organic Contamination), meaning that your Chlorine is locked up. Phosphates may cause this and fuel the growth of algae.

If levels are not where they belong, adjust as required and circulate between chemicals in this order:

  • Alkalinity (5lb increments)
  • Circulate at least 2hrs
  • pH
  • Circulate at least 2hrs
  • Chlorine
  • Circulate at least 6hrs
  • Stabilizer
  • Circulate 2 weeks
  • Calcium Hardness
  • Water may cloud

  • Seasonal Preventative Measures:

  • Add Keetrol Plus (Metal Control) at the rate of 1 ounce per 10,000 gallons of pool water every 2-3 weeks, after the initial dosage.
  • Add Algaecide at the rate of 1 ounce per 10,000 gallons of pool water every 2-3 weeks, after the initial dosage.
  • Add Clarifier at the rate of 1 ounce per 10,000 gallons of pool water every 2-3 weeks, after the initial dosage.
  • First Signs of Algae: Cloudy water, slimy walls and/or floor, green tint* to water, visible growth on walls and/or floor, first areas which may show growth are under lights, step areas, swim-outs.

    Treat algae as follows:

  • Brush walls and floor.
  • Shock pool, at the rate of 1 pound of shock per 10,000 gallons of pool water.
  • Use the correct dosage of algaecide (determined by strength purchased).
  • Run filter overnight.
  • Vacuum thoroughly.
  • Backwash filter, then re-charge.
  • Treat filter with 0.25 pound of shock and 1 ounce of algaecide directly into skimmer while pump is running.
  • *Green Tint:

  • May be algae or may be metals.
  • Treat algae with chlorine shock & algaecide.
  • Treat metals with Keetrol Plus (Metal Sequestering Agent).
  • Salt Generators:

  • Using a salt system requires higher Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer/Conditioner) levels, check you manual for details.
  • When running higher than 70%, the generator may require the assistance of granular Chlorine shock.
